Anaheim Physics Tutor Tip What is a Joule - TutorNerds
Anaheim Physics Tutor Tip What is a Joule - TutorNerds Anaheim Physics Tutor Tip: What is a Joule? A Better Understanding of Energy Anaheim Physics Tutor Tip: What is a Joule? A Better Understanding of Energy A common difficulty for physics students is conceptualizing new measures and what they represent. Itâs easy enough to understand meters and seconds since weâre used to these concepts of distance and time. Other units, however, that arenât as common in our day-to-day can be harder to understand. As an Anaheim physics tutor and physics teacher, Iâve found that if students have a strong understanding of units and learn to trace and connect different units, that it dramatically in both their physics understanding and their physics grades. We have already discussed this concept when reviewing the concept of the Newton. Now, we will be discussing another common contributor to physics confusion: the Joule. The joule is a measure of energy. This is probably a concept you are familiar with, but not in specific scientific terms like it is used in physics. Here, energy is the unit that is transferred in order to do work on something or to heat something. However, this definition is not usually very helpful in helping students understand what one joule is. Instead, letâs try to get a better picture by looking at some of the equations that include it: Our first equation is one that you will work with often in introductory physics classes which is the equation for kinetic energy. Here, kinetic energy is defined as one-half of the mass times the velocity squared. This represents the energy that a moving object has. Thatâs why our only variables are mass and velocity. The heavier a moving object is, the more energy it has; and the faster an object is, the more energy it has. Now, letâs break these variables down into their units: As we just discussed, the unit for energy (including kinetic energy) is the joule. The unit for mass is kilograms, and velocity is meters per second. By squaring the velocity units like in the equation, we get to this simplified unit definition of joules (note that the âone halfâ isnât a variable and doesnât have units â" itâs just a number). Weâve now seen one explanation of the joule as itâs used in kinetic energy. However, in physics, we use lots of equations for joules. If a joule is always a unit of energy, then it should be the same regardless of which equation we use. Letâs try again with another common introductory physics equation: potential energy. Potential energy is determined by the weight of an object and how far it is from the ground. Specifically, this is called gravitational potential energy â" itâs the energy caused from separating objects with mass from each other where there is a force from gravity. In most introductory physics applications, the gravity we are talking about is from the earth, which is approximately 9.8 meters per seconds squared. Again, our unit of energy is the joule, mass is kilograms, the acceleration from gravity (âgâ) is meters per seconds squared, and height is measured in meters. Again, we only care about the units, so weâll drop the 9.8 and multiply the units to get our simplified definition: Notice that we got the same answer when using both kinetic energy and potential energy: even though theyâre different equations, they lead to the same definition. Letâs try one more time with a different equation. Remember that energy can be defined as the ability to do work. As such, we often use equations that involve equating work and energy. So, we may have an object with a starting kinetic energy, but some of that energy is lost when it does work. This means that work is measured in joules, but how can that be if the equation looks so different? Work is the applied force multiplied by the distance it is applied for (specifically the displacement). Letâs see what happens if we break it down into the units. Work is measured in joules, force is in newtons, and distance is in meters. However, we already learned that newtons can be broken into its definition in basic units (***see here again for newton post*****). Newtons are now written as kilogram*meters per seconds squared. This clears up our equation a lot, because now if we multiply by the last unit of meters we get our simplified equation: Which is the same as our definition that we found when using the kinetic or potential energy equations. For fun, you can also think about the famous physics equation (that is not often used in introductory physics classes) of E=mc2. This equation is also for energy, and is measured in joules. Here, âcâ is the speed of light, which â" since itâs a speed â" is measured in meters per second. See what you get if you break this equation into its fundamental units and if it is the same as our definitions above. Learning how these new units can be broken down into fundamental units can help with your understanding of physics and your execution of equations when taking tests or solving problems. Take the time to break up your equations into fundamental units and you may be surprised at how related many of them are. Book your private Anaheim physics tutor today! Mistakes are the portals of discovery - ALOHA Mind Math
Mistakes are the portals of discovery All parents have different ways of dealing with childrenâs mistakes. One of the common approaches nowadays it to make light of them, so as not to affect the childâs psyche by pointing them out too much. It is debatable whether this is the best way to prepare a child to face the future and bigger challenges in life. Experts in child development suggest that it is better to let children understand mistakes and figure out a way to resolve the issue themselves. We as parents would probably be surprised by the inventive problem solving skills that this leads to. It is also a great natural method of improving the intelligence and IQ of a child, since it helps the child figure what the problem is all about, rather than just learning from rote. Once such an outlook is fostered in the child, give him a math problem, and he will strive at arriving at the solution despite making mistakes. Such a practice enables children to be more independent with their homework. Along with encouraging a child to be independent and learn from their mistakes, it is also equally important to praise their efforts. Developmental theories show that children may have different learning styles, and each one may take their own time to handle such an approach.By enabling your childâs self-efficacy, you will be preparing and encouraging him/her to be his/her own person and handle even high-stress situations with confidence. When faced with a situation such applying for as a scholarship, such a child will not back away or be worried about failure, but will think of applying multiple times to succeed. To put all that in a nutshell, we need to Give children the space to learn from their own mistakes and not jump in to do everything for them. Not harp on earlier mistakes, but discuss the one at hand and what might have gone wrong, so that the child gets a hint of what went wrong and to correct themselves. Encourage and praise children when they solve problems on their own. Support their independence by letting them treat their mistakes as stepping stones. Abacus is a great way to improve your childâs confidence and to improve his mental math abilities which in turn will have a positive impact on his attitude to learning too. How To Win The Wolf Prize In Chemistry
How To Win The Wolf Prize In ChemistryFor those who are keen to win a Wolf Prize in Chemistry you will be delighted to know that the competition for this award is fierce. It is worth your while to read on and understand the rules so that you can make a good choice. In physics, the Wolf Prize is presented to a student who has won a major discovery for his or her student group, or to a group of students for discovering a new result that is a major step forward in the study of physics. This award is also given to a student who has made an outstanding contribution to science. The jury also considers the impact of the winner upon other areas of research in the field of their choice. A scientific group has won the Wolf Prize in chemistry if it has written a significant paper which is being cited by other scientists all over the world. Many universities offer a PhD in chemistry as part of their curriculum. To qualify, you need to show your team-work and leadership abilities as well as your cr eativity, analytical ability and imagination and be open to ideas and experimental techniques. If you are unsure whether you can cope with the challenge of completing a course such as this, you may want to consult a fellow science student who knows what you are going through and who can help you cope. Although a PhD in chemistry is not difficult to achieve, you will have to adapt your approach to make it work, if you want to win the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. If you choose a course with lots of practical labs, as many in chemistry courses do, you may find it hard to stay focused on learning all the chemical formulas needed for the real coursework. You may also find that you get very little practical time to actually work with chemicals and crystallization; even if there is plenty of lab time. All this can make the course boring and at times even intimidating.Take your choice of course wisely. Because this award is awarded to a student in chemistry, there are usually several other compet itors. With so many scientists competing for the same award, it is important to select a course that is designed with a lot of flexibility in terms of the format of lectures and how you plan to do your lab work. If you spend most of your time in lecture halls, you may end up getting very little experience. The award has been available since 1930 and is well respected by other researchers. As there are no monetary prizes, the award can be only awarded to students who have really shone as a student. To win this award you need to show that you have a true interest in the subject of your PhD in chemistry.
Stay Current on Any Class This Summer with 3 Tips
Stay Current on Any Class This Summer with 3 Tips Your summer break is a well deserved vacation. Chances are youve spent the academic year studying, taking tests, and writing essays. Make time this summer to work, travel, and relax, but also to stay current on your classes. Here are three tips for staying current on any class this summer so that you will be ready to succeed when the fall semester rolls around: 1. Use memorization devices Depending on your course, memorizationdevices may be ideal for you. Here are a few mnemonic devices that may be able to help youdiscover your best learning style. Consider using index cards or electronic flashcards to record them and to study them. You can also keep a small notebook with informationthat you can review should you have a spare moment while riding the bus, doing your laundry, or waiting in a line. Mnemonic devices work well for many students, and if youre an auditory learner, formatting your new concepts into a catchy rhyme or song can be especially beneficial. These note-taking formatsmay be a usefulhelp as well. 2. Read material related to your topic Another way to stay current on class information is by reading supplemental material. Visit your local community or school library to find books or magazines on your courses subject. You may also be able to find study guides with practice testsfor informal review throughout the summer. These practice testsmay also be a good practice tool In addition to librarians, ask your professors for any recommendations they will likely have a wide-ranging knowledge of literature that is useful to you. Be careful not to limit yourself to print. Instead, conduct an online search of articles that pertain to your class. Sometimes, these articles will be free and available to anyone on the Internet. Other times, you may need to access them through a university or academic institution. Oftentimes, there will be new and interesting updates to your field of study. By seeking out material on your course topic over the summer, you may be ahead of the curve when school starts up again. 3. Find a study or discussion partner Working with someone else is a great way to stay academically up-to-date. Study sessions can increase your motivation and accountability for academic work that you might not want to do otherwise, especially during the summer months. By finding a classmate or friend to study with, you can bounce ideas off of each other and benefit from your shared knowledge and skills. If youre practicing a language, try to find a native speaker who can be your language partner. Look into events or workshops at community centers or libraries, as they may have educational gatherings suited to your topic of interest. If youd like to receive more focused learning, consider seeking a tutorfor the summer months. You dont have to let your skills and knowledge languish in the heat of the summer. You can stay current on a class by using any or all of the above tips to help you remember and even build on concepts youve learned throughout the school year. When you return in the fall, youll be fresh and ready to tackle your courses.
How To Succeed In Science And Engineering
How To Succeed In Science And Engineering Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM programs) have historically been the toughest majors, with science and engineering leading the way, according to an article in the New York Times. However, the STEM fields also have the largest potential to boost Americas economy, and that is why President Obama is placing a major emphasis on these programs. But, its not going to be easy. Politicians and educators have been trying to improve students test scores in the STEM fields for years, and they are running out of ideas. Currently, American students trail behind many foreign countries in STEM fields, and Washington is hoping to become more globally competitive through these fields. That is why Obama and industry groups have called on colleges to produce 10,000 more engineers a year and 100,000 new teachers with majors in STEM programs. Obama is hoping this can put America on the leading edge of STEM innovation. Step one: start early. Obama has put grade school students under the microscope, analyzing their STEM scores more closely than any other group and always promoting the fields as career options. His efforts have produced some promising results, as more college freshmen are becoming interested in STEM programs. However, for too many, the interest stops during their freshmen years because they cannot meet the demands of these rigorous courses. Nearly 40% of students planning engineering and science majors end up changing their major or failing to get any degree even though these students tend to have the highest SAT scores. Also, earning a STEM degree is becoming increasingly more challenging. Many freshmen level STEM classes are actually designed to weed students out, and unfortunately, they hit their mark far too often. Making these classes easier is not the answer. So, the Association of American Universities, which represents 61 of the largest research institutions, announced a five-year initiative to encourage professors to employ more interactive teaching techniques a plan many educators are hoping will increase student interest. Educators are trying to make the entry-level classes more about practical, real-world application and less about memorizing equations and facts. Also, they want their classes to be more discussion based instead professors just lecturing. But there are other factors affecting these programs, factors beyond the STEM programs control. Grade inflation in the humanities and social sciences has attracted a lot of students, even some STEM students because their grades historically tend to be the lowest among freshmen. College GPA has always been perceived as a strong indicator for early career success; however, a 3.5 in an English program is not necessarily better than a 2.5 in a STEM program. Many students transfer out of STEM classes to achieve a higher GPA, thinking they will find better jobs out of college. But, thats not exactly true because there are many more open jobs in STEM fields. The struggle has always been getting students to plunge through the difficult entry-level classes. But right now, a STEM degree is one of the most valuable degrees a student can have.
Got Let Go Here are the Next Steps - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Got Let Go Here are the Next Steps - Introvert Whisperer Got Let Go? Here are the Next Steps Okay, youâve been let go. Itâs not the end of the world. Repeat: itâs not the end of the world. But it is time to get practical. Here are the immediate steps you should take after youâve been dismissed. Make sure you havenât been unfairly dismissed Your dismissal probably wasnât legally unfair if it was for one of the following reasons: Misconduct Inability to do the job (including lack of necessary qualifications or failure to meet a legal requirement for that particular job) Retirement (but not compulsory retirement on the grounds of age) Redundancy. If you werenât dismissed for any of the above reasons, and you continuously worked for your employer for two years, you could take them to an employment tribunal, which could decide that you should be reinstated in your job, given a different job within the company or be awarded compensation. Even if you didnât work for your employer continuously for two years, you can still take your them to an employment tribunal if their main reason for dismissing you was âautomatically unfairâ. There are many forms of dismissal classed as automatically unfair, including dismissal due to pregnancy and dismissal due to membership (or non-membership) of a trade union. Make sure your employer has met their obligations Legally, your employer cannot simply wash their hands of you when they let you go. First off, they are required to give you notice. If youâve been working in that job continuously for a month, your minimum notice period is one week. This goes up to two weeks when youâve been working for your employer continuously for two years, with another week added for each subsequent year of work (up to a maximum of 12 weeks). Check your contract though â" it might state that youâre entitled to longer than the legal minimum notice period. Understandably, the minimum notice periods set out in law or in your contract may not apply in cases where dismissal is for misconduct. You should be entitled to your normal weekly wages during your notice period, or sick pay if youâre off sick during that time. You might also be owed pay for holiday you havenât taken and reimbursement for expenses. If youâve been working in your job continuously for two years, you have the right to ask your employer to provide you with the reason(s) for your dismissal in writing. Employers have to grant these requests 14 days after they receive them. Having a written statement setting out the reasons for your dismissal can be helpful when you start to apply for other jobs. Tackle the dreaded RFL Whether your dismissal damages your chances of getting another job really depends on why you were dismissed. If you were let go for a reason that does not reflect badly on you (eg redundancy), you should be fine. A reference from your old employer should confirm that you did nothing wrong, and if you want extra confirmation, you can always ask your employer for a statement giving the reasons for your dismissal (see above). Things get trickier if you were dismissed for misconduct. If you donât include this information on your CV or covering letter, it will probably come out in your old employerâs reference. If you donât put your old employer down as a referee, itâs going to look strange, and if you get an interview, youâll be asked why. One way to get around this is to ask your employer for a âbasic referenceâ stating only your dates of employment, salary and job title. However, if they know something about you that could cause problems for a new employer, theyâll probably disclose it. Otherwise, they risk being sued later down the line. It can be a good move to apply for temp work, as temps are less likely to be asked why they left their previous employment. Meanwhile, voluntary work can help you acquire new skills, more confidence, and of course, a better image. By starting a new job, paid or unpaid, youâre also broadening your options for referees. Look into benefits If youâre struggling for money, you should look into the possibility of claiming benefits. Check your eligibility using entitledtoâs benefits calculator.
